General

 Prof. Hartmut Asche heads the  Chair of Geoinformatics and Cartography at the  geographical institute at the University of Potsdam. He taught GIS the very first time to students deeply involved in computer science since his students usually come from the field of geography.

Geographic Information Systems are not something completely new to me. My Bachelor project relies on many GIS techniques and algorithms.
Maps and lots of their non-geographic applications were comprehensively discussed in the Visualization lecture.

The language used throughout the lecture was German. Nevertheless, I decided to write my solutions in English.

The motivating exercises, supervised by Jan-Arne Schwarz, emphasized the practical use of the top-selling GIS tool ArcGIS 3.2 (written by  ESRI).
Due to the limited number of licences available at the HPI, a small team consisting of Hugues Levental and me jointly processed most of the assignments.
